12 Project Management Principles

The foundational guidelines from PMBOK 8th Edition

The PMBOK 8th Edition introduces 12 principles that serve as the foundation for project management practice. These principles are not prescriptive — they do not define a process or dictate what must be done. Instead, they describe the behaviours, characteristics, and activities that contribute to project success across all approaches (predictive, agile, and hybrid).

Each principle is interconnected. For example, focusing on value (Principle 4) requires effective stakeholder engagement (Principle 3) to understand what value means to different stakeholders. Leadership (Principle 6) enables the team environment (Principle 2) which supports adaptability (Principle 11).

Key Points

  • 12 principles replace the 5 process groups as the primary organising framework
  • Principles apply regardless of delivery approach (predictive, agile, hybrid)
  • Principles describe behaviours, not prescriptive processes
  • All 12 principles are interconnected and mutually reinforcing
  • Stewardship is the first principle — setting the ethical tone
  • Value focus (Principle 4) means understanding what benefits the organisation seeks
  • Tailoring (Principle 7) is now a core principle, not just guidance
  • Adaptability and change (Principles 11-12) reflect the modern environment
